Scoring & Maths — Cricket Guides

Cricket statistics are the language of the game — every number tells a story about how a match was played, how a career unfolded, or how a team is performing.

Batting average is the cornerstone metric for a batter: total runs divided by the number of times they were dismissed. A Test batting average above 50 marks a genuine great; above 45 is elite; 40 is the benchmark for a reliable international performer. In ODI cricket the bar is slightly lower given the format's attacking demands, and in T20Is averages are compressed further by the premium placed on strike rate — runs scored per 100 balls faced. A T20I batter combining a 30+ average with a 140+ strike rate is operating at the highest international level.

Bowling average — runs conceded per wicket taken — is the equivalent for bowlers. Under 25 in Tests, under 30 in ODIs, and under 20 in T20Is signals a high-class wicket-taking option. Economy rate (runs conceded per over) matters in the shorter formats where containment is as valuable as wicket-taking. Bowling strike rate (balls per wicket) is the purest measure of how quickly a bowler gets batters out.

Net Run Rate (NRR) governs group-stage tiebreakers in all ICC tournaments. It is calculated as (runs scored ÷ overs faced) minus (runs conceded ÷ overs bowled), aggregated across all matches in the stage. NRR is the first tiebreaker after points, so a team's margin of victory matters even in comfortable wins. A positive NRR means a team is, on average, scoring more quickly than they are conceding; negative NRR is a warning sign that the team has been struggling to dominate.

The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method is used whenever weather interrupts a limited-overs match. It recalculates a revised target using a resource table — overs remaining and wickets in hand — that quantifies exactly how much scoring potential the interruption has removed. The DLS method replaced the simpler (and often unfair) run-rate average method that preceded it. Required Run Rate (RRR) is the simpler in-match calculation: runs still needed divided by overs remaining, expressed per over. A RRR under 7 in a T20I is manageable; above 12 is typically a steep ask. These guides cover all of these formulas, with worked examples, so you can calculate them yourself.
