What Is Hawk-Eye in Cricket?

Hawk-Eye is a ball-tracking computer system developed by Hawk-Eye Innovations that uses multiple cameras positioned around the ground to track the trajectory of the cricket ball from the moment of delivery. In cricket DRS, Hawk-Eye (or an equivalent system) traces the ball's actual path from the bowler's hand to the point where it hits the batter's pad or body, then predicts where the ball would have continued had the pad not been in the way. This prediction is used to determine whether the ball would have hit the stumps — critical for lbw decisions.

How Ball-Tracking Works

The system typically uses six or more calibrated cameras positioned at different angles around the ground. Software triangulates the ball's position from multiple simultaneous camera feeds, creating a 3D model of its trajectory accurate to within a few millimetres for the portion of the flight it tracks. Once the ball contacts the pad (where Hawk-Eye's prediction begins), the system extrapolates the trajectory using physics modelling — accounting for speed, spin, seam, and atmospheric conditions. This extrapolated section is an estimate, which is why a zone of uncertainty (umpire's call) is built into DRS.

Hawk-Eye was first used in cricket in 2001 for broadcast analysis. It was not used for actual lbw decisions until the ICC trialled it in 2008 and formally introduced DRS in Test cricket in 2009.
