What Is Snickometer and Ultra-Edge?

Snickometer and Ultra-Edge are audio analysis technologies that detect whether a cricket ball has made contact with the bat edge by analysing the audio waveform at the exact moment the ball passes the bat. Both systems use a microphone on or near the bat to capture sound; an algorithm then analyses whether a spike in the audio waveform coincides with the ball passing the bat's edge. A spike at that instant strongly suggests bat-ball contact; no spike suggests the ball missed the bat.

Snickometer vs Ultra-Edge

Snickometer was the original audio analysis system, first used in cricket broadcasts in the 1990s. It displayed an audio waveform on screen, allowing commentators and viewers to identify sound spikes. However, Snickometer had a slight time-lag and required human interpretation of the waveform. Ultra-Edge, the more modern system used in official DRS, is synchronised precisely with the video frames and the ball-tracking data, making it possible to identify the exact frame where the ball is closest to the bat edge and whether a sound spike coincides.

Snickometer was developed by British inventor Allan Plaskett in 1999 for Sky Sports broadcast use. Ultra-Edge (also called Real-Edge or Edge Detector by different broadcasters) is the third-umpire-certified variant used in formal DRS reviews.

Limitations and False Positives

The main limitation of audio edge detection is that spikes can be generated by sources other than bat-ball contact: the bat hitting the pad, the bat dragging on the ground, the bowler's foot hitting the crease, and crowd noise can all cause audio disturbances. Ultra-Edge has become more sophisticated at filtering these false positives, but ambiguous cases remain. When the audio spike is large and coincides precisely with the ball passing the bat, the evidence is considered conclusive. When the spike is small or the timing is ambiguous, the third umpire may rely more heavily on Hawk-Eye and visual evidence.
