What Is the Impact Player Rule?

The Impact Player rule, introduced in the IPL from the 2023 season, allows each team to make one in-match substitution — replacing a player in the starting XI with a nominated substitute player from a list of four. The substitute becomes a full team member and can bat or bowl.

How It Works

1. Each team nominates four substitute players before the toss
2. After the toss, both squads are finalised
3. At any time before the 14th over, the captain can introduce the Impact Player
4. The replaced player leaves the match entirely
5. The Impact Player can bat, bowl, and field like any regular team member

Strategic Uses

• Bringing in an extra batter if wickets fall cheaply during the powerplay
• Introducing a specialist bowler for the death overs if the match situation demands
• Replacing a player who has already batted or bowled their full quota
• Tailoring the XI mid-innings based on pitch conditions or opposition strategy

Effect on Team Selection

The rule effectively allows teams to field 12 active players across a match. This has led to teams including more specialist batters (knowing they can add a bowler later) or building XI compositions that would be incomplete without the Impact Player completing the balance.

Criticism and Debate

Critics argue the Impact Player rule disadvantages bowlers, as teams tend to select an extra batting option and use the substitution to add bowling depth later. Others feel it makes matches more dynamic and improves entertainment value. The ICC has not adopted the rule for international cricket as of 2026.
