Inswing Bowling Technique
How to bowl inswing — the grip, wrist position, seam angle, and how to use the delivery that swings into the right-handed batsman's body.
Inswing is a delivery that curves into the body of a right-handed batsman. It threatens the stumps from an unexpected angle, creates LBW opportunities, and pins the batsman down behind the line. A fast bowler who can swing both ways — in and out — is genuinely difficult to play.
Grip for Inswing
- Hold the ball with the shiny side facing the leg side (toward the batsman).
- Index and middle fingers on top of the seam.
- Thumb underneath on the seam.
- Seam angled toward fine leg on the batsman's side.
- Wrist slightly rotated so the back of the hand faces covers (opposite to outswing).
Release Point
Inswing requires the wrist to be more 'open' at release — the inside of the wrist rotates toward gully. This is why many bowlers find inswing less natural than outswing. The delivery should be on a full length or yorker length — shorter deliveries don't spend enough time in the air to build the swing.
