Swing bowling is one of the most potent weapons in a fast bowler's arsenal. When the ball curves through the air before reaching the batsman, even the best technique can be undone. Understanding the physics and mechanics of swing helps both bowlers and batsmen.
What Is Swing?
Swing is the lateral movement of a cricket ball through the air caused by an air-pressure differential across the two halves of the ball. One side of the ball is smooth and shiny; the other is rough. Air flows differently past each side, creating a pressure imbalance that curves the ball's flight path.
Conventional Swing
In conventional swing, the shiny side of the ball is held facing the direction you want the ball to swing. The seam is angled slightly in the direction of movement. Outswing moves away from a right-handed batsman; inswing moves into them. Conventional swing works best with a new or relatively new ball.
Reverse Swing
As the ball ages (typically after 30+ overs), the rough side becomes very rough and the shiny side remains polished. At high pace, the ball can be made to swing in the opposite direction to conventional — this is reverse swing. It surprises batsmen expecting conventional movement and is devastatingly effective in the right conditions.

Why do bowlers put saliva on the ball?
Saliva was traditionally used to polish the shiny side of the ball. The ICC banned the use of saliva during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020) and later made the ban permanent.
Can spin bowlers swing the ball?
Not in the traditional sense — conventional swing requires pace to generate the necessary air pressure differential. Some medium-pacers can swing at lower speeds, but true swing is a pace bowling skill.
