Reverse Swing in Cricket

Reverse swing is the phenomenon where an old, asymmetrically worn cricket ball swings in the opposite direction to conventional swing at high pace. It is one of the most destructive weapons in fast bowling and has produced some of the most memorable spells in cricket history.
When Does Reverse Swing Occur?
Reverse swing typically begins after 30–40 overs when the ball is significantly worn. One side must be rough (allowed to degrade naturally) while the other is polished (maintained by licking and rubbing). Once the asymmetry is pronounced enough, high-pace deliveries generate swing in reverse.
The Physics
With a conventional new ball, the smooth side creates laminar air flow that separates smoothly, and the rough side creates turbulent flow. Conventional swing results. As the ball ages and the rough side becomes very rough, the turbulence regime flips — the very rough side generates turbulent flow at a critical transition point, and the ball swings toward the rough side instead.
How to Bowl Reverse Swing
- Hold the old ball with the rough side facing the intended swing direction (opposite to conventional).
- Keep the seam upright and angled slightly.
- Bowl above 85 mph (137 km/h) — reverse swing needs pace to trigger the air-flow transition.
- Use the same action as conventional swing — the secret is in the ball condition and pace, not a different action.

Is reverse swing legal?
Yes — reverse swing achieved through natural ball wear and legitimate polishing is completely legal. What is illegal is artificially roughing up the ball (ball-tampering).
Can medium-pace bowlers generate reverse swing?
Rarely — the pace threshold for reverse swing is high. A bowler under 75 mph (120 km/h) will struggle to trigger the turbulence transition needed.
