No two cricket pitches are the same. The pitch — a 22-yard strip of carefully prepared surface at the centre of the ground — can be hard and fast, soft and seaming, bone-dry and spinning, or anything in between. The conditions of the pitch shape the entire match, influencing whether the toss is crucial, which bowlers should open, and how batters should approach their innings.

Key pitch characteristics

  • Pace — how fast the ball comes off the surface after pitching. A fast pitch suits pace bowlers and helps batters who play off the back foot. Common in Australia (MCG, WACA) and South Africa.
  • Bounce — the height the ball rises after pitching. Consistent bounce is preferred by batters; variable bounce (some balls staying low, others rising sharply) causes dismissals. Perth's bounce is notoriously high.
  • Seam movement — a fresh, grassy pitch will grip the seam and deviate the ball laterally. Common in England and New Zealand. Gradually reduces as the game progresses.
  • Moisture — damp pitches offer swing and seam in the first session; once they dry out and harden, batting becomes easier. Morning conditions in England can be dramatically different from afternoon.

Reading the pitch — the captain's skill

Captains and coaches assess the pitch before the toss to decide whether to bat or bowl first. A grassy, damp pitch on a cloudy morning in Manchester suggests bowling first — the conditions will help the new ball swing and seam, with batting becoming easier in the afternoon. A dry, cracked pitch in Chennai suggests batting first and building a big lead before the spinners exploit the deteriorating surface in the fourth and fifth innings.

Pitch-doctoring — groundsmen deliberately preparing a pitch to neutralise the opposition's bowlers — is controversial. The ICC has penalised venues for substandard pitches that have produced too much turn too early (e.g., the 2023 ICC penalty on the Indore pitch).
