Cricket South Africa signed a landmark deal with the six SA20 franchise owners in 2022. Each of the six teams is owned by an IPL franchise: Mumbai Indians (MI Cape Town), Delhi Capitals (Pretoria Capitals), Chennai Super Kings (Joburg Super Kings), Royal Challengers Bangalore (Sunrisers Eastern Cape), Kolkata Knight Riders (Durban's Super Giants), and Rajasthan Royals (Paarl Royals). The ownership model provided the league with ₹500 crore+ in upfront investment before a ball was bowled.
Format
The SA20 is a standard T20 competition. Six teams play each other in a round-robin group stage, followed by semi-finals and a final. The competition runs in January–February each year — part of the South African summer and the global T20 calendar window. Each team is allowed international players — typically a mix of South Africans and international imports.
Playing Standard
The SA20 attracted top international players from its first season. Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, and Tristan Stubbs represented South African stars.
