What Is the SA20?

The SA20 is South Africa's premier franchise T20 cricket league, launched in January 2023 and sanctioned by Cricket South Africa. What makes the SA20 unique is that all six franchises are owned by IPL teams — bringing the commercial expertise, resources, and global brand recognition of India's franchise cricket into the South African market.

The Six SA20 Franchises

The six SA20 teams are: Sunrisers Eastern Cape (owned by Sunrisers Hyderabad, SRH), Paarl Royals (Rajasthan Royals, RR), MI Cape Town (Mumbai Indians, MI), Joburg Super Kings (Chennai Super Kings, CSK), Pretoria Capitals (Delhi Capitals, DC), and Durban's Super Giants (Lucknow Super Giants, LSG). Each franchise wears derivative of their IPL parent's colours and incorporates some of the same branding elements.

SA20 Champions

Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the inaugural 2023 SA20 season — a debut title for the SRH-owned franchise. The competition plays in January-February, slotting into South Africa's summer and coinciding with the Big Bash League in Australia. The SA20 has attracted top international talent and South Africa's best domestic players, rapidly establishing itself as one of the premier T20 leagues outside the IPL.

Impact on South African Cricket

The SA20 has given South African domestic players a high-quality T20 environment that was previously unavailable domestically — the old Ram Slam T20 Challenge was a modest competition compared to the SA20. The league has also kept South Africa's internationally based players (many play in the IPL, BBL, and CPL) visible in domestic cricket through the January window when many leagues are inactive.
