Seam movement is the lateral deviation of the ball off the pitch caused by the raised seam interacting with the surface. Unlike swing (which happens in the air) or spin (which relies on finger rotation), seam movement is generated at the moment the ball contacts the pitch — making it unpredictable and very hard to play.
How the Seam Creates Movement
A cricket ball has a prominent raised seam running around its equator. When a pace bowler holds the ball with the seam upright and the ball lands on or near the seam, the seam can deflect the ball either toward the off side or the leg side. The angle at which the seam lands determines which direction the ball moves.

Holding the Ball for Seam
