Strategic Timeout in Cricket — What It Is and How It's Used

A strategic timeout is a short scheduled break (typically 2.5 minutes) taken by the fielding team during a T20 innings. It allows the captain and coaching staff to regroup, reassess the game situation, and communicate a revised tactical plan. Strategic timeouts are a feature of the IPL and some other T20 leagues — they are NOT part of ICC-regulated international T20I cricket.
IPL Strategic Timeout Rules
- Each innings has two strategic timeouts of 2.5 minutes each
- First timeout: must be taken between overs 6 and 9 (after powerplay, before the middle overs)
- Second timeout: must be taken between overs 13 and 16 (before the death overs)
- The fielding team decides the exact over within the allowed window to call the timeout
- A timeout can be called before any delivery in the designated over window
- Drinks are served to the players on the field during the timeout
Why the Timing Matters
Captains are strategic about WHEN within the allowed window they take their timeout. If a batting partnership is building momentum at over 8, the fielding captain might call the second timeout to break the rhythm and regroup bowlers. Conversely, if the fielding team just took a wicket, they might delay the timeout to let the pressure build on the new batter rather than giving the batting team a breather.
What Happens During a Strategic Timeout?
During the 2.5-minute break, the fielding team's players gather in the middle with the captain and sometimes the coach communicates from the boundary (in leagues where coach access is permitted). Teams review what the batter at the crease has been doing: which areas they're scoring in, what shot they've been playing to different deliveries. The batting team uses the break to rehydrate, communicate between batters, and plan for the next phase.
Strategic Timeout Used to Break a Partnership
IPL 2022, RCB vs MI: Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell were scoring freely in overs 8–9, building a dangerous stand. MI's captain called the strategic timeout at over 9, used the break to move an extra fielder to deep square leg (where Maxwell was scoring), and gave Jasprit Bumrah a revised plan. Bumrah dismissed Maxwell on the first ball after the timeout — the break had allowed MI to re-engineer their approach.

No. Strategic timeouts are specific to franchise T20 leagues (like the IPL, PSL, and some others). International T20Is under ICC rules do not have strategic timeouts — though scheduled drinks breaks may be taken at the end of overs.
