Two New Balls in ODI Cricket: Why It Changed the Game

The Old Rule and Its Problem

Before 2012, ODI cricket used a single ball for the entire 50-over innings, with both new balls available (one white ball from each end) but typically the same ball used from ball 1 onwards. As the ball aged through the innings (approximately overs 30-45), it became soft and difficult to swing — producing the 'flat ball' phase where batting teams found it easier to score because the bowling team had nothing to offer beyond yorkers and slower balls with an unresponsive ball. Teams batting second in the 40s and 50s specifically benefited from the old-ball conditions when defending or attacking.

The introduction of the two-ball rule in 2012 (implemented for international cricket by the ICC) changed the ODI ball's life cycle: one white ball bowled from each end of the pitch, both starting new, both deteriorating from over 1. The two new balls age simultaneously, producing conditions where both balls are in their peak swing window (overs 1-20) simultaneously, and both reach their flat phase simultaneously (around overs 30-40). There is no longer a period where one ball is 'old and flat' while the other provides some life.

Effect on Batting and Bowling Strategy

The two-ball rule significantly changed ODI scoring patterns. The final-overs scoring advantage that batting teams had with the old single-ball rule (the ball was dead, bowlers had nothing to offer) was reduced — both balls age together, so the bowling team still has some life in both balls during the death overs (41-50). However, the effect has been more nuanced: the two balls' simultaneous deterioration means that reverse swing (which requires one ball to be older than approximately 40 overs) arrives later in a two-ball innings — or not at all, since neither ball reaches the 40-over age threshold in a 50-over innings where balls are changed regularly.

Death bowling in ODIs has become more reliant on yorkers, slower balls, and off-cutters because the tools that previously assisted (seam and swing) are reduced under the two-ball rule. The increased boundary-scoring in modern ODIs (England's 498 world record, multiple 350+ totals) is partly attributed to the two-ball rule's reduction of swing in the middle overs — batting teams face softer, less threatening deliveries from overs 20-40 compared to the pre-2012 era.

Ball Management Challenges

Maintaining two balls simultaneously requires more effort from the fielding team. Only one ball can be rubbed at any given moment (the active ball), and the team must track which of the two balls is in better condition for specific bowling purposes. Some captains develop a system of labelling balls (typically by the over in which each was first used) and asking fielders to track the condition of each. The bowling end changes (with both balls alternating) also means the fielding team must remember which ball is at which end each over — a minor but real organisational challenge during a busy match.

T20 uses a single ball: T20 international cricket uses a single white ball for the entire 20-over innings. The ball does not deteriorate sufficiently in 20 overs for the two-ball rule to be necessary — at 20 overs, the ball is still relatively lively for pace bowling. T20's single-ball system produces shorter swing windows (the new ball swings for approximately 3-5 overs) before the ball settles into the flat middle phase for overs 6-15 and then the death overs (16-20) where yorkers dominate.

Has the Rule Achieved Its Aims?

The ICC introduced the two-ball rule partly to address the 'old-ball batting paradise' problem of the pre-2012 era, but also to make the white ball more visible for spectators throughout the innings (a new white ball is brighter than an old white ball). Scoring rates in ODI cricket have increased substantially since 2012 — but this is attributed primarily to T20 technique cross-pollination (batsmen developed more aggressive shots through franchise T20 cricket) rather than the ball rule alone. Most analysts consider the two-ball rule a modest change that reduced one specific tactical option (reverse swing) without dramatically altering the overall game balance.

Can fielding teams choose which ball to bowl from which end?

Yes — the captain can choose which ball (the one stored at each end) to bowl from either end at any point.
