Swing bowling is one of cricket's most potent weapons: the ball curves through the air before it even reaches the batter. The two principal directions are inswing (curving towards the batter's legs) and outswing (curving away from the bat towards slip). Mastering the difference between them is the foundation of fast-bowling craft.
How swing works — the aerodynamics
A cricket ball has one smooth, shiny side and one rough side. The bowler maintains this asymmetry by polishing one side and leaving the other alone. When bowled at pace, the smooth side generates less air resistance than the rough side, creating a pressure difference that curves the ball in the direction of the rough side.
Outswing
In outswing, the ball curves away from a right-handed batter — that is, towards the slip cordon on the off side. The bowler holds the seam upright angled slightly towards fine leg, with the shiny side facing the batter. The ball curves across and away, often drawing an edge from a batter who follows the original line of the delivery.
Outswing is particularly dangerous early in an innings when batters have not yet settled in. The classic outswing dismissal is caught behind or in the slip cordon.
Inswing
Inswing curves into the right-handed batter, moving from the off side towards the leg stump. The shiny side faces towards fine leg, and the seam angles towards the slip cordon. Inswing can pin batters lbw, crash into the stumps, or produce an inside edge onto the stumps or glove.
Reverse swing
After roughly 40 overs, when one side of the ball has become very rough and the seam has flattened, the ball can suddenly swing in the opposite direction to what the grip suggests. This is reverse swing — and it's highly effective because batters and commentators are still trying to read the same swing direction. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis (Pakistan) were the pioneers of reverse swing as a match-winning weapon.
Conditions that enhance swing
