Misbah-ul-Haq: Pakistan's Most Successful Test Captain

Misbah-ul-Haq captained Pakistan through one of the most turbulent periods in their cricket history and emerged as one of the most respected leaders the country has produced. Calm, disciplined, and phenomenally consistent as a batter, he was the cornerstone of Pakistan's batting from his Test debut in 2001 until his retirement in 2017.

Batting Record

Misbah played 75 Tests and scored 5,222 runs at 46.62, with 10 centuries. His batting style was famously patient — he rated accumulation and occupation of the crease highly, and his technique of nudging singles and leaving outside off-stump drew occasional criticism from those who preferred a more aggressive approach. But his numbers vindicated the method.

Captaincy and No. 1 Ranking

Misbah captained Pakistan in 56 Tests with 26 wins, 20 draws, and only 10 losses. Under his leadership, Pakistan reached the No. 1 ranking in Test cricket in 2016 — a remarkable achievement given the team could not host home matches due to security concerns and had to play 'home' Tests in the UAE. He was also a highly regarded one-day captain.

2007 T20 World Cup Final

Misbah's most heartbreaking moment came in the inaugural T20 World Cup final in 2007, when Pakistan needed 13 off the last over against India. He went for the scoop shot over fine leg but was caught, gifting India victory. The dismissal became one of cricket's most discussed moments, though Misbah went on to achieve so much in the ensuing decade that it forms only one chapter of an illustrious career.
