How to Watch Cricket Live — Broadcast Rights Explained
Cricket broadcast rights are split between free-to-air television, pay TV, and digital streaming services — and the picture varies enormously by country and by tournament. No single provider covers all of international cricket globally. Understanding which rights holder covers which tournament in your territory is the essential first step to watching live.
In India, Star Sports and its Disney+ Hotstar streaming platform hold the rights to the Indian Premier League, India home internationals, and many ICC events. JioCinema (Reliance Jio) took over IPL digital streaming rights from 2023 onwards and streams IPL matches free for Jio subscribers. For matches involving the Indian team overseas, rights depend on the host broadcaster: Star Sports usually sub-licenses them for Indian audiences, but always confirm ahead of a series.
In England and Wales, Sky Sports Cricket holds exclusive rights to England home Tests and most major series. Channel 4 occasionally airs free-to-air highlights and select matches. The ECB's The Hundred competition is split between Sky and the BBC, with BBC iPlayer streaming select games free. The Vitality T20 Blast and County Championship are available via Sky Sports and BBC Radio Test Match Special.
In Australia, Fox Cricket (Foxtel) and Channel 7 share domestic rights. Channel 7 airs all Australia home Tests live on free-to-air under the anti-siphoning rules, while Fox Cricket carries every ball across all formats. Kayo Sports (Fox subsidiary) provides a streaming-only option without a Foxtel subscription, covering Australia home matches, the Big Bash League, and major ICC tournaments.
In Pakistan, PTV Sports is the primary free-to-air broadcaster for Pakistan home matches and the Pakistan Super League. ARY ZAP streams PSL digitally. In South Africa, SuperSport (DStv) holds comprehensive rights to South Africa home games, SA20, and ICC events; SABC sometimes airs select matches free. In the United States and Canada, Willow TV is the specialist cricket streaming service, covering India, Pakistan, and major ICC events. ESPN+ occasionally carries international fixtures.
Rights change every few years when contracts expire and are re-tendered. ICC tournament rights (T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup, Champions Trophy, World Test Championship final) are sold as a package and syndicated to sub-licensees in each territory. The best approach is to check your local cricket board's website (BCCI, ECB, CA, PCB, CSA) for confirmed broadcasters ahead of a major series, as this guide is updated periodically but cannot reflect every mid-cycle change.
